Youth of the Year

Youth of the Year

Established in 1947, the Youth of the Year is BGCA’s premier youth recognition program and the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a Club member’s family, school, community and Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend had three well-deserving teens compete at the local competition, and, after hearing from all of the teens, the judges selected Drew as the 2020 Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend’s Youth of the Year!

When asked about the impact that the club had on him, Drew said “The Club definitely has had a positive impact. They have introduced me to most of the people I am friends with today. I also got my first job here and have been presented with many other job opportunities.” The Youth of the Year program emphasizes leadership and community service in and outside of the club. Each candidate is asked to describe a leader in their own words. Drew described a leader as “someone who takes charge of the situation, works well with others to finish something and tries to make sure no one gets left alone.”

Drew will receive a $5,000 college scholarship that will be applied towards a Firefighter/EMT program at Chemeketa Community College next fall. He will compete in the Virtual State competition with a chance to win an additional college scholarship. The winner of the State competition will then go on to compete at the Regional competition and eventually on to the National Youth of the Year competition!
